2017 Volunteer of the Year: Mildred Herberger
Mildred began her 20 years of volunteer service when Ronald McDonald House Houston’s Holcombe House opened in 1997. Since her start, the organization continues to grow exponentially to include additional Houses, Family Rooms and Cookie Corners throughout the Texas Medical Center. Thankfully, Mildred’s support remains constant throughout this growth. She’s shared countless smiles, hugs, welcomes and comforting words to families served by our mission. She has graciously donated her time every Thursday and in total, over 2,100 hours of service during her weekly shift!
In addition to families, co-volunteers and staff benefit from Mildred’s support. She is highly knowledgeable and always willing to lend assistance and a listening ear when needed. Her calming, gentle spirit remains a cornerstone of our home and resonates throughout. RMH Houston is pleased to honor Mildred as our Volunteer of the Year and honored to call her family.

Oralys goes above and beyond even in the smallest of details, such as when speaking to our patients and inconspicuously finding out what their favorite show is, just so that she can turn the tv to that specific channel, next time the patient visits our areas. Because she knows some of our patients love extra soft chocolate chip cookies and some of them love hard cookies; she always bakes both types of cookies and knows exactly who likes which cookies and makes sure they receive just the right (consistency) one! Our children love Randee because she always makes time to stop and have Mogie play ball with them. She walks through the front doors with a beautiful smile and a servant heart, ready to handle whatever challenges arise that day. Randee has taken the initiative to work with another volunteer to create step-by-step instructions (with pictures) for multiple processes that can be handled by seasoned volunteers which will also go into a training manual for House Managers. This has taken hours and hours of dedication while in the House and even typing detail instructions at home. This manual will prove to be invaluable for years to come. She still makes sure that Greystar continues their quarterly meals for our families. Gaynell has put together a team of family and friends for the past several years to come in and prepare a “full feast” on Thanksgiving. The holidays are extra difficult for our families to be away from home and dealing with their child’s medical situation. Gaynell and her caring team want to make sure that bring a little extra comfort to them on Thanksgiving Day. It is because of these reasons and many others that our team is excited to recognize Gaynell Lira as our January Volunteer of the Month.
