Each summer we offer a hands-on day camp packed with educational activities, fun games, arts and crafts, and a weekly field trip for kids and siblings staying at our Holcombe House. Camp brings the children a sense of normalcy and provides a welcome break from the daily reality of their illness.
Summer Camp takes place inside our Holcombe House school room. Our staff works closely with talented and dedicated RMH Houston volunteers who lead the camps to plan a fun and educational experience for the children; many of the volunteers are teachers on summer vacation and community teen leaders serving as camp counselors.
Each week of camp has a different theme and the week’s activities are all planned around that theme. 2016 themes included Animal Planet, Reach For The Stars, Lost At Sea, Shark Week and more! At the end of each week field trips are planned to correspond with the theme. Field trips included: The Houston Museum of Natural Science, Houston Astros Game at Minute Maid Park, Wonderwild Indoor Playpark and much more.
RMH Houston Summer Camp gives the children a welcome break from the realities of their illness or their sibling’s illness. For many this is their first time attending a summer camp. While at Summer Camp the children are just like any other child, enjoying the summer – laughing, learning, creating, experimenting, and having fun.
If you are interested in volunteering this upcoming year as an adult teacher or a teen camp counselor, please submit a volunteer application here or contact our Director of Volunteer Services at email@example.com.
