27 Nov Cactus Cowboy: Laurel’s Masterpiece
Laurel is an 18-year-old from Arkansas who stayed at our Holcombe House several times while receiving a bone marrow transplant at Texas Children’s Hospital. Laurel loves animals (she has several pets at home!), arts & crafts, and making new friends from all over the world. Laurel often participated in our pet therapy sessions at the House and especially enjoyed the reptile activity during our Summer Camp. Laurel finds crafting very relaxing and even taught herself to crochet while she was in the hospital. Using her vivid imagination and creative ability to represent the holidays in her new home city, Houston, Laurel created Cactus Cowboy during a summer art activity.
More than anything, Laurel enjoyed meeting other families at Holcombe House. She said that the silver lining from Hurricane Harvey was that “all the families who stayed at the House during the storm became even closer and bonded as one big family.” Laurel and her mother returned home to Arkansas a few days after the hurricane, and she is excited to share her artwork and love for the families she grew closer to through the 2017 Holiday Card Program.
